Life is too cruel. And what about us?

This news, which I read in BBC Turkish, affected me deeply:

Canadian parents, who will lose three of their four children’s eyesight, took them on a world tour to enrich their memories.

Sight is the most important of our senses. It must be much harder to lose once you have this ability. It is certainly more difficult for children in the prime of life to experience this situation.

Three of the four children of Canadian couple Edith Lamay and Sébastien Pelletier will soon lose their sight. This very rare disease is based on the deterioration of the retina’s structure from the outside to the inside. Just like the day turns into evening, the eyes get darker and after a while, it becomes completely invisible. And unfortunately there is no cure.

Canadian couple and their children

It’s a very difficult situation. Knowing that their children will go blind and not being able to do anything.

The Canadian couple did not accept this situation for a long time. Experts have recommended that children acquire visual memories from books before their eyes are completely blind. Instead of a book, they wanted to go on a world tour and experience the elephant, the lion, the mountains and the seas by experiencing them personally. They gave up most of their possessions to be able to finance this world tour. In order to see and visit more places, they planned a trip that would keep travel and accommodation costs low. They have traveled to 6 countries in 3 continents so far. Among these countries is Turkey.

Anne Edith Lamay says in an interview with the BBC:

We wanted to enrich their visual memory. But we also wanted our children to be more resilient individuals. They will need it for the rest of their lives. I don’t want them to see what’s happening to them as a curse or something terrible. I want them to see this as their life journey. They have great struggles ahead, but they have the materials to deal with these struggles.

Now I ask you and myself. How would we act if we had such a disease? Would we curse the darkness as the majority do, or would we draw a path to the light like this Canadian couple…
